Enfield Poltergeist

Stories of poltergeist activity have been an interest of mine, perhaps more so than other kinds of alleged “hauntings”. This stems mostly from some of the evident peculiarities and similarities amongst the cases. This is just a short review, but the phenomenon almost always begins as a tapping or knocking sound that is heard. This is where we get the term from anyway, it roughly translates from German into English as ‘noisy-ghost or spirit’. The phenomenon is usually focused on a pubescent child in the home, almost exclusively a girl. This fact has lead some Parapsychologists to theorize that the Poltergeist Phenomenon may actually originate from the mind of the child in the form of recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis.

The idea is that perhaps as these girls are undergoing the normal process of development, the stress and/or hormones causes the girls to unconsciously act out in less than normal ways (i.e. psychic). Others believe that these stories represent actual entities which are external to the child that seems to be the focus of the phenomenon, perhaps because they are being targeted for nefarious reasons no doubt.

For today’s post I wanted to focus on a very specific reported case of Poltergeist activity which is a very interesting case study in possible genuine phenomenon which occurred alongside trickery or at least an exaggeration of the reported phenomenon by the witnesses. Most of the information that I’ve listed below comes from Colin Wilson’s Poltergeist which, as the name suggests, The reports of what happened here began over 30yrs ago on an August night in the year 1977 in Enfield, England.

40yr-old divorcee Margaret Hodgson lived in a rented home with her four children; Rose aged thirteen, Janet aged eleven, Pete aged ten, and Jimmy aged seven. Pete and Janet shared a room and it was this room that would be the site of much of the alleged phenomena. That night, after Pete and Janet had gone to bed their beds began to move in a strange fashion. They called their mother in, she thought that they were messing around and told them to go back to bed.

Picking up the story Wilson notes (as a note Wilson refers to the family as Harper and not Hodgson for reasons I’m not aware of):

The next evening, the children heard a shuffling noise, like a chair moving. Mrs. Harper came in and asked them to be quiet. The room all seemed to be perfectly normal. But when she switched off the light, she also heard the shuffling noise. It sounded like someone shuffling across the room in slippers.

Then there were four loud, clear knocks. And when Mrs. Harper put the light on again, she saw the heavy chest of drawers moving on its own. It slid a distance of about eighteen inches across the floor. She pushed it back. It slid back again.

At this point Hodgson decided to run to a neighbor named Vic Nottingham. Nottingham and his son ran inside the house and searched around, I assume for some kind of explanation for what the Hodgson’s were experiencing.  As the Nottinghams were inside the house, the knocking began again. By this time, Hodgson must have had enough and decided to call the police.

Wilson writes:

They sent for the police. When the lights were switched of, the knocking started. Then, in the light from the kitchen, everyone saw a chair that was wobbling into motion. It slid toward the kitchen for three or four feet.

Evidently they should have called the Ghostbuster (man that was bad) because the police leave seemingly without being able to offer any kind of explanation or solution for the Hodgsons. The family slept that night in the living room.

The following day all was seemingly quiet until night fell. Wilson tells us:

Then the poltergeist began throwing things. Marbles and Lego bricks came zinging through the air as if shot from a catapult. When someone picked up one of the marbles, it was found to be burning hot.

Eventually the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) was to get involved with the case. Specifically, Guy Playfair would come in on the case and spend the next two-years investigating this case. This case has a lot of media attached to it. Below is one of the more (in)famous photos from the case that purport to show one of the girls, Janet, being thrown around the room by the alleged entity.

EnfieldPoltergeist2.jpg

I’m not the first person to suggest this, but to me at first glance this photo appear to show girls jumping around on their bed. That doesn’t mean it’s what’s actually happening, but it certainly looks that way. In the end Playfair was to write a book recounting his version of the events which took place at the Enfield house entitled This House is Haunted. Playfair concludes the following about the case:

When Mr. and Mrs. Harper were divorced, an atmosphere of tension built up among the children and their mother, just at the time when the two girls were approaching physical maturity. They were a very energetic pair to start with, both of them school sports champions, but even they could not use up the tremendous energy they were generating. So a number of entities came in and helped themselves to it.

So many years later, and being so removed from the events, it’s hard to say what may have actually occurred here. Playfair seemed to believe that some genuine paranormal events happened in this case, but at the same time it’s known that the girls were found to be faking some of the events. If there was real weirdness happening here, why did the girls fake some of the experiences? Who knows? Could it be that the girls liked the attention they were receiving, especially from the male investigators as a replacement for their father’s attention and didn’t want for it to end?

If you want to learn more about this case, there have been a plethora of documentaries made about it. Most of which seem to be available on youtube. And if that’s not enough for you, because Ed and Lorraine Warren somehow got involved in the case at some point, you can look forward to seeing a version of the events on the big screen in the form of The Conjuring 2 coming sometime in 2015.

Tale of the haunted pizza place

When you think of places that are haunted you would likely imagine old houses, maybe hospitals, or perhaps hotels and motels. But what about pizza places? If the following video is to be believed then Stocky's Pizza, a restaurant in Haughton, Louisiana is haunted by something that likes to mess with one employee, Lori Evans, in particular. The story comes via a local radio station, Kiss Country 93.7. From the original article entitled "Is Stocky's Pizza Haunted? Shocking Surveillance Footage Points to Paranormal Activity [VIDEO]":

Many folks believe in ghosts, but few can say they’ve caught evidence of a haunting on video. Stocky’s Pizza employee Lori Evans says there’s not only a ghost haunting the recently opened Haughton, Louisiana pizzeria, but that it’s far from friendly. And she has some unnerving surveillance camera footage to prove it.
Last Saturday morning, Evans arrived at Stocky’s to find the ice scoop in the middle of the kitchen floor. When the staff left the night before, it was placed on top of the ice machine where it’s normally kept.

The discovery was the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back,” Evans tells Kiss Country.
A number of similarly eerie incidents prior to that morning prompted her to scour the surveillance video to see just what was going on. What she discovered will make you shiver.
The following video was recorded on July 14 at a little after 6 a.m. — hours before the arrival of any of the staffers. Nobody was in the pizzeria at the time, confirms Evans.
Here in all of it's glory is the video.

Personally I've watched this surveillance footage more than a few times and I can't really make anything out. Maybe you can see what it is that is supposed to be taking place and I would certainly appreciate any input or opinions. Regardless of what is or isn't happening in the video, the article goes into more detail about some other experiences that Lori Evans has a had at Stocky's Pizza.

The first thing that happened was when I was standing in the kitchen area at the dough roller working. All of a sudden a bottle of tobasco sauce hit me in the back then landed on the ground. I looked back because the bottle had been on top of the microwave. A server who was in the dining area actually saw it happen and we were both freaked out because it flew across room as opposed to just falling from its spot! We started wondering at that point. The tobasco sauce has been mysteriously thrown several times and busted on one occasion! Another time was when we were working and heard a loud crash in the back hall. When we went to see what it was, there was a broom and a dust pan both on the floor. They “snap” into a holder on the wall so they are never on the floor. They’d been hanging there fine all day with no problems and snap into separate holders, yet both fell???? The motion sensors have gone off twice and the alarm company has called the owner to come out and check; to find nothing. Several of us have actually “felt” a presence and had the hair stand up on our arms/neck. When I came in that morning and found those on the floor, so far from their spot, I knew it was time to check it out on tape and we finally found evidence of activity!

Follow this link for the original article from Kiss Country 93.7. I'm not too sure what to make of Evans' account. It definitely isn't anything out of the ordinary (ha!) as far as “haunted” places go. Although the location in this case is a bit unusual, I suppose anywhere can truly end up haunted. As a kind of post script to this story, in the comments section below this article Lori Evans states that a ghost researcher/paranormal investigator has gotten in touch with her in order to set up an after hours investigation. Hopefully some more information will come out of this about what's going on. As always be sure to check out the original link for the full article and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments below. That's all I have for now and suddenly I'm craving some pizza, so if you please excuse me I've gotta get my 'za on!

If at first you don't succeed

There's an old expression that goes along the lines of “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.” Or something like that. Well, luckily the Disclosure movement has heard this and taken it to heart. Recently the Paradigm Research Group (that would be Stephen Bassett's group for those playing along at home), put together a new Disclosure Petition. I have to hand it to them, the petition has apparently made it to the White House's website. That's something at least. Although what it will actually accomplish …... well that's another matter entirely.

The petition states right off the bat what it's aim is. Namely:

We, the undersigned, strongly urge the President of the United States to formally acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race and immediately release into the public domain all files from all agencies and military services relevant to this phenomenon."

Now, can anyone guess what's wrong with this? If you said the part about the POTUS acknowledging the existence of an extraterrestrial presence on this planet, you would be correct. There are a lot of assumptions in that document, which isn't all that surprising given that its a variation of the same old Disclosure movement. I've said it before and I will say it again, the government will not (and probably can not) disclose it's knowledge of an extraterrestrial presence on the earth because it doesn't seem like there is any knowledge to disclose.

The irony here isn't lost on me by the way. The Disclosure Movement continues to try and petition the government for the ubiquitous “Truth”, and I continue saying that they are wasting their time and should be focused on something non-ETH related for a change. So I guess I'm really not any better or different. I will give them one thing, they have over 10,000 signatures. So that's something to be sure. I guess I will try to refrain from being too judgmental until after it's all said and done.

If this happens to be up your alley, by all means feel free to follow these links to learn more and sign the petition. Until next time this is your friendly neighborhood Fortean signing off.

Life happens.

Hey there readers, sorry it's been a few days since my last post. Life has been pretty hectic here the last few nights. So I'm back with just a quick little post in order to get your opinion on what you think.

The video below is purportedly of "poltergeist" activity. It looks interesting, but as with most things that are found on the internet (and YouTube in particular) I take it with a grain of salt, at best. At worst I can only assume it's a hoax. Anyway have a look for yourself and let me know what you think. Until next time, take it easy!

Here's the link to the guys site that is videoing this "activity". And here is a link to the relevant discussion over at the AboveTopSecret website.

Book that has a trailer?

As I am in the process of finishing Fringe-ology (expect a review within the week hopefully) I thought I would share this trailer from the book's website here.

Meaning of life?

Bill Hicks was an amazingly profound comedian who, like everyone who was really on to something, was taken away at a very young age. I highly recommend that you check out his work. Here he is on the ever elusive 'Meaning of Life'. Also if you happen to have a Netflix account, you can check out an awesome documentary on Bill Hicks called Bill Hicks an American Story.

Something a little positive for a change

Here is a something a little different to start off the day at Forteania. Take a few minutes to watch the video and reflect on some of the decisions that you may make throughout the day. We have a very beautiful planet, lets just hope it stays that way for years to come.

No post tonight!

Sorry guys and gals, there will be no posting tonight. Had a pretty long day. Ashley and I saw Transformers Dark of the Moon, and all things considered it wasn't a terrible movie. It definitely is a summer movie and a fairly decent one at that. Go see it if you liked the other ones or if you just enjoy watching silly summer action movies. Finally started reading DMT The Spirit Molecule, so expect a review up soon. Speaking of which, look for a review of Ivan T. Sanderson's Invisible Residents as well. That's all for tonight, be sure to check back tomorrow for more!

For those that don't like to read

I'm excited to read the book first, but I was pretty happy that I stumbled upon this earlier tonight. For more information check out the movie's website.

Thursday's Adventures in Twitterland

I took the day off from work because I was 'sick', so Ashley and I decided to go back to our local Barnes & Noble store. The last time that we went there it resulted in our failed search for Messie the Lake Murray monster, which you can read about here in case you missed it. While there I decided to look for two books that I need to read so I can remove them from my reading list. As I mentioned on my Twitter account, I am finishing up Ivan T. Sanderson's Invisible Residents. And since I am so close to finishing it I thought I would go ahead and pick up one or both of the books I want to read next. One is Steve Volk's Fringe-ology, the other was DMT The Spirit Molecule by Rick Strassman MD, recommended to me by Greg Bishop

The first book I went to look for was Fringe-ology, because so far DMT The Spirit Molecule has always been in the same exact spot (the new age section go figure). So I found a customer service person and asked her to look up Fringe-ology, after a few minutes of searching for it in the computer she was sad to tell me that they (once again) didn't have it in stock. That makes the third time in as many weeks that this Barnes & Noble has still not gotten this book in. So I did what any rational adult would do in this case, I bitched about it on Twitter.
@countduckula
Also why the hell isn't there a single book store in my area that carries Steve Volk's 'Fringe-ology'? The one time I don't want an ebook

I don't mind ebooks, you see? But for one reason or another I really wanted 'Fringe-ology' in a physical copy. But no, nobody wants to help
Well after griping a bit about that I decided that I would locate the Strassman book. Luckily I was able to find it and so with that I sat down and began to listen to some music while I looked at some random Tumblr's. Of course looking at the Strassman DMT book reminded me of a story that Daily Grail had linked on their site. They had linked to a YouTube video where Alex Jones, surprisingly, went off on a rant about ….... DMT! (Yeah like you couldn't see where this was going). As I hadn't gotten a chance to watch the video I was pretty excited, Alex Jones is always good for a laugh. Not because I don't at least entertain as possible some of the things that he rants and raves about, its just that I have a hard time buying into the whole NWO/Illuminati thing (sometimes). Unfortunately for me however the original YouTube video that the guys over at the Daily Grail had put up had been removed by user. Since I still had Twitter up and running, I figured, “What the hell? Why not put the call out to someone in the Twitterverse”.
@countduckula
Speaking of research into psychedelics, evidently Alex Jones had a little rant about them the other day. Unfortunately I missed the video

And now it seems to have been removed from YouTube, can anyone direct me to the video so I may watch his latest shenanigans?
About the time that I put that call out to Twitter, I notice that Steve Volk had responded to my tweets
about my inability to find his book! Which I thought was pretty cool of him all things considered. So we talked for a few minutes on Twitter about his book, publicity, and the hardships of tracking it down. Eventually he wished me luck in locating the book and hoped that I would enjoy it. It was at this time that someone from Twitter (HolyGhostTrance) replied with the a copy of the YouTube video of Alex Jones's DMT rant. Here is that video for you to enjoy as well.

After all of this had occurred it was time for us to pack up so I could head to class. On the way out we ended up buying the DMT book and also William Gibson's Neuromancer. So that brings us to the end of my Twitter Thursday adventure. I was able to locate one of the two books that are on my 'To read' list. And had a wonderful day spent out with Ashley (and not at work). If there is a moral to this story I suppose it is best summed up in this tweet.
@countduckula
Apparently if you wish to find something on the Internet, all you have to do is ask Twitter
That's all I have for tonight Twitter, I have to go finish Invisible Residents so that I can start on DMT The Spirit Molecule. Until next time, have a great night!

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's ..... a city?

Never fear dear readers, my apparent funk from last night has finally lifted. Today is a normal day for your friendly neighborhood Fortean Philosopher. And as is often my habit, I scanned news sites today hoping to find more modern occurrences of Fortean phenomena to share with you, because I figure that the phenomena didn't just go away with the passing of Charles  Fort. And I am happy to report that I was able to do just that.

As reported earlier today by the Daily Mail, an apparition of a city appeared over the Xin'an River in Huanshan City in East China. Here is a little blurb from the article along with some photos, follow the link for the whole article and the accompanying video as well.
Residents in a Chinese city have been stunned after a giant mirage of a 'ghost city' towered across the skyline.
The apparition appeared earlier this month after heavy rainfall and humid conditions along the Xin'an River in Huanshan City in East China.
Tall buildings, mountains and trees appeared to rise up through the ghostly mist that had descended over the river at dusk. There is usually nothing buy sky across the horizon.
Link to the article.

Look out below!
This phenomena should be familiar to my fellow Forteans out there. Charles Fort in his book New Lands published in 1925. The book mostly dealt with Fort's expansion of his 'Sargasso Sea' theory and his theory behind anomalous falls ( i.e. fish falling, blood, giant blocks of ice, etc) that basically there were 'obviously' floating islands in the sky. His evidence for this were stories not unlike the one from China. Where people have, for centuries, reported sightings of cities in the skies. Often many of the cities didn't match the descriptions of any towns nearby, leading one to question just where they were originating from.

It almost goes without saying at this point that if you found this article interesting (and I highly recommend you go read more and check out the cool videos that are posted up at the Daily Mail site) then you should definitely read Fort's books. For my review on Fort's work, you can check this post. Until next readers, watch out for falling cityscapes.

Lazy Sunday take 2

Today was yet another lazy Sunday for your friendly neighborhood Fortean philosopher. I got a late start to the day, waking around 11:30 am, and had to get ready to take Ashley to work. We were able to spend about an hour together before she actually had to to go in, so after stopping at Sonic for some drinks (her a root beer with some vanilla flavor, and me with a Sonic Oreo Blast) we headed to the shopping area where she works.

Our first stop was to the Best Buy, where I purchased the kick-ass net book that I am still typing on at this moment (First mentioned in this post). We were hoping to find some cases for some of our electronic equipment; above mentioned net book, and Ashley's drawing tablet for her laptop. Unfortunately we had no such luck. The next store we went to is one I can never seem to get away from. Pet Smart. For whatever reason Ashley, and I assume most women as well, seem to be drawn to pet stores. While inside I was witness to some PG-13 actions by two lizards. (see picture below)

It's hard to see but those lizards are totally making out!

After this it was time for Ashley to go to work. When I dropped her I off, I made my way to my regular haunt for these Sunday afternoons where I don't really have anything better to do. Panera Bread. Great place, great food, and for the most part they leave you alone even if you sit all day without actually ordering anything to eat. So for a while I did my usual thing of browsing my favorite sites (check this post for my recommended daily visits).

I finished with those sites fairly quickly, mostly because (unlike this dumb guy) they post the majority of their stuff Monday through Saturday (you know like smart people). So I moved onto funny YouTube videos. I can't remember what spurred this on exactly, but I would like to share with you the best one of the bunch. It's from the musical comedy group The Lonely Island, here is the video.

Seriously do yourself a favor and check that video out, it's hilarious. Anyway this led me to start searching on ATS (Above Top Secret) for videos. They have a somewhat decent media section and so I was hoping to find something interesting. Or at the very least, entertaining. I was definitely not wrong. What I stumbled upon was a really cool crowd-sourced film called Zenith.

It tells the story of 'Dumb' Jack, a failed neurosurgeon from the year 2040. In this dystopian world all people have been genetically engineered to constantly be in a happy state, but because of this they have become so numb that they now seek out ways to inflict pain. After dropping out of medical school, Jack finds his niche as a drug dealer. Literally selling people old prescription drugs that are no longer made so that they can feel the pain caused by the side effects of the drugs. All of this changes for Jack when he stumbles upon tapes made by his father that warn of an all reaching group called Zenith. Unless this group could be stopped, the world would end up in exactly the state that Jack lives in.

It's an excellent movie and I literally just got finished watching it. The best thing about it is that the producers have given it out for free, as a torrent download. Follow this link here in order to obtain the film for yourself.  I highly recommend you check it out, especially if you enjoy Science Fiction. Well that about raps up my second lazy Sunday, regular posting will resume tomorrow night. Until then enjoy the music video and check out the movie.

Bigfeet (or whatever the plural of Bigfoot is, Bigfooti?)

As I noted in one of yesterday's post, tomorrow evening on the east coast and earlier in the afternoon pacific time, Sanger Paranormal Group is set to release their 'evidence' of Bigfoot. Before the actual event, however, I would like to take a moment to point something out.

In their press release that Sanger Paranormal Group sent out to media outlets, I guess to stir up interest, they mentioned that their 'evidence' was the best the Cryptozoological community has seen since the Patterson Gimlin Film. So dear readers what I will be doing tonight is giving you access both to the Sanger Paranormal Group's 'evidence' and the classic Patterson Gimlin Bigfoot footage. My question to you will be, which do you find more convincing?

All I will say is this, if both are hoaxes at least Patterson and Gimlin put far more effort into their video. Without further ado here are the respective evidences. Let me know what you think!

First up is the Patterson Gimlin footage originally shot in 1967.
"Face print" of Bigfoot found by Sanger Paranormal

OK Forteans that is all for now, like I said let me know what you think about these two pieces of 'evidence'.

More pictures! This time of Ghosts!

Following on last night's theme of famous UFO photos, I have decided tonight to showcase some famous Ghost photos. As with last night I will leave the judgment up to you as to the authenticity of the purported phenomena that has been captured by the camera.

First up is the Brown Lady

This is a photo that is believed to have capture the spirit of Lady Dorothy Townsend who was the sister of England's first prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Her ghost had been sighted off and on for about two hundreds years when finally she was 'captured' on film. The person that was able to capture the photo you see above was Indra Shira a photographer who had been hired to take pictures of Rainham Hall. According to his testimony, as Shira was preparing to take an image of the staircase he saw a shadowy smoky form appear to take the shape of a girl and had his assistant take the shot. The result is seen above. Experts that have examined the photo have found no evidence of either forgery or fakery.

Up next is the Tulip Staircase Ghost
When the Rev. R. W. Hardy and his wife were on vacation from Canada to England in 1966, they decided to visit the Queen's House. This was a place that Charles I had built for his wife, Henrietta Maria, which is situated on the Thames below London. While they were sightseeing and taking pictures to remember their trip, the Reverend decided to snap a photo of a staircase (I promise there isn't a pattern developing here I promise). They didn't have the film developed until they returned to their home in British Columbia, once they had they noticed the above photo that appears to show a cloaked figure ascending the staircase.

The Back Seat Ghost
This next one is fairly straight forward when compared to the last two. A husband and wife went to the graveyard where her mother was buried in order to take photographs  (because who doesn't do that right?). When the wife was returning to the car, she decided to take a picture of her husband who was alone in the car. Or at least he was supposed to be. Upon development of the photos, the wife immediately recognized that the person sitting in the back seat was in fact her mother.

And last but by no means least is the Hampton Court Ghost
This last one is both the most recent one available and the most intriguing. The above is actually a still frame from a CCTV recording of a cloaked figure opening a door at the Hampton Court in West London. Many tourists had claimed that they had seen the figure while on tour of the palace. But it wasn't until the CCTV footage (which you can view here) that seemed to provide some evidence to support this claim. Follow the link to see the footage for yourself, but if you can I will summarize it for you. Basically a figure in what appears to be period dress bursts through the doors in the frame and steps through, then proceeds to close the doors one at a time. Apparently no staff was present at the time, as this occurred after hours. No explanation has been offered and it hasn't been seen since.

The problem with Ghost pictures is really the same as with photos of any Fortean phenomena, namely that people are going to assume that it was faked. Especially if it's too good to be true. I offer the above images simply for your enjoyment, maybe you hadn't seen them before and so you were able to learn something. Well that's all from me tonight loyal readers. I am off to bed, I have work and then class tomorrow night. Take it easy!

I'll just leave this here with you

Thoughts?
